Its name comes from Arabic and literally means "wound of the flesh", probably referring to the unpleasant smell that the flowers of this genus give off, just like Stapelia, which is very similar.
Aloe tomentosa is a perennial shrubby plant which forms a single rosette: it becomes 60-120 centimeters tall. Its leaves are light green tinged in red on the top, and they may have stripes or spots.
